Reading poems with children introduces a love of language, wordplay, sensory images, and rhyme. But poetry also entertains and illuminates life.
What do you do with poetry? Read poems with kids aloud, use poems to inspire artwork, introduce a love of wordplay, and write poetry to express feelings and sharpen observations. Kids love humorous poetry by poets like Shel Silverstein, Dean Myers, Jack Prelutsky to name a few.
One last thing - poems are meant to be read out loud.READ them out loud!
And read them more than once.
You’ll find new understandings of each poem when you listen to it more than once.

We'll also have a week of Magnetic Poetry at lunch during the week of April 25th to 29th. What's that you say? What's magnetic poetry? Well it's:
individual words—often related to a particular theme or topic—printed on small magnets which can be creatively arranged into poetry on a metal surface.
Poem in Your Pocket Day April 28th
Every April, on Poem in Your Pocket Day, people celebrate by selecting a poem, carrying it with them, and sharing it with others throughout the day at schools, bookstores, libraries, parks, workplaces, and on Twitter using the hashtag #pocketpoem.
Poem in Your Pocket Day was started in 2002 in New York City as part of the city’s National Poetry Month celebration. Then in 2008, the Academy of American Poets made the initiative national, encouraging individuals across the country to join in.
We'll be sharing our pocket poems on Thursday for Poem in Your Pocket day. Students and staff will share their poems with each other all day.
